1 · Say what you want to achieve
Choose a specific task: explain, compare, summarize or draft. “Help me study” becomes “Create five practice questions from the following notes and ask me one at a time.”
2 · Give the necessary context
Describe the audience, prior knowledge, source material and constraints. An email needs its purpose, recipient and tone. An analysis needs the data and a specific question. Include only information necessary for the task.
3 · Describe the answer you want
Ask for a table, three suggestions or an explanation in simple language. A useful template is: “Help me with [task]. Context: [background]. Take [constraints] into account. Respond as [format]. Ask questions if important details are missing.”
4 · Check and improve
Judge the answer against your goal. Change one part of the prompt first and compare the result. Even a precise prompt can lead to invented facts. More experienced users can keep a small set of their own test cases to compare new versions.
